Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Namibia on Wednesday morning sparked excitement and pride among the Indian diaspora, as he began his first-ever visit to the country — only the third by an Indian Prime Minister to Namibia.

Members of the Indian community in Windhoek expressed their joy and anticipation over PM Modi’s visit.

“We are thrilled that PM Modi has arrived in Namibia. We will present a Garba dance to welcome him,” said one enthusiastic diaspora member.

Another added, “This is the first time I am going to meet Modi ji, and I am very excited.”

PM Modi was warmly received at Hosea Kutako International Airport by Namibian Minister of International Relations and Trade, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, reflecting the significance Namibia places on the diplomatic engagement.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared on X: “PM Narendra Modi lands in the capital city of Windhoek, Namibia, to a warm welcome. This is the first visit of the PM to Namibia.”

On X, PM Modi called Namibia a “valued and trusted African partner”, stating: “Landed in Windhoek a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and addressing the Namibian Parliament today.”

As part of the ceremonial welcome, PM Modi was greeted with traditional hospitality and even tried his hand at playing Namibian traditional drums, highlighting the cultural warmth shared between the nations.

According to the MEA, the visit includes bilateral talks with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, an address to the Namibian Parliament, and a tribute to Namibia’s founding father, Dr. Sam Nujoma.

This visit marks the final stop in PM Modi’s five-nation tour, which also included Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Brazil, where he attended the 17th BRICS Summit and was conferred Brazil’s highest civilian honour.

The Prime Minister’s presence in Namibia is expected to bolster bilateral cooperation and reaffirm India’s enduring historical and strategic ties with the African continent.
